Union Certificate Exam Preparation – Compact Course for Helmsman

This compact course is designed for experienced navigation personnel who wish to prepare efficiently and practically for the official Union Certificate (GDWS) exams.

Based on the Inland Waterways Vessel Personnel Ordinance (BinSchPersV) and aligned with EU Directive 2017/2397, this course ensures that participants are fully prepared to take on responsibility at the command level of an inland vessel — regardless of vessel type or size.

Participants will build the skills necessary to plan voyages safely, manage onboard operations, and comply with both national and international regulations.

Program Topics Include:

General regulations for navigating inland waterways
Special rules for specific waterway sections
Route planning using nautical information
Crew requirements under current personnel regulations
Communication procedures and manoeuvring behaviour
Manoeuvring and vessel handling under operational conditions
Safety and health protection onboard
Theoretical and practical exam preparation

Examinations:
This course prepares you for the official GDWS Union Certificate exams.

Important:
Enrollment in this course does not include exam registration with the GDWS. You must register separately with the GDWS office of your choice.

Requirements for Exam Admission:

Proof of sufficient onboard service time
Physical and mental fitness to serve as boatmaster
Valid VHF radio certificate
Minimum age: 18
