This combined course is designed for career changers and crew members looking to move from operational roles into leadership positions on inland vessels. The program prepares participants for the official Union Certificate exams (GDWS) through a combination of theoretical and hands-on training.

Aligned with the Inland Waterways Vessel Personnel Ordinance (BinSchPersV) and EU Directive 2017/2397, the course ensures participants meet the European qualification standards for inland navigation.

Whether in cargo shipping, passenger transport, push towing or ferry services, the course teaches how to operate vessels safely, plan routes according to regulations, and take full responsibility for onboard operations.

Legal regulations for inland navigation
Route planning and use of national/international nautical information
Leadership-level knowledge of vessel operations
Equipment handling, maintenance, and onboard systems
Crew requirements and regulations
Communication and manoeuvring protocols
Vessel handling and operational safety
Dangerous goods (ADN) awareness
Safety and health protection onboard
Exam preparation – theory and practical

Examinations:
Preparation for the Union Certificate exams conducted by the GDWS.

Important:
Enrollment in the course does not include exam registration. Please register directly with a GDWS office at least five weeks before your exam date.

Admission Requirements:

Proof of onboard service time as deck crew
Medical and mental fitness
Valid VHF radio certificate
Minimum age: 18
