Compact Training – High Rhine

Aim

Existing skills are specifically strengthened through realistic scenarios on the Basel city section of the Rhine. If the compulsory pilot becomes unavailable, the vessel command must once again assume full responsibility and act quickly, safely and confidently, even without a route-specific licence (Streckenpatent).

Description

Safe navigation of the Basel city section, for which a route-specific licence is required, demands the highest level of attention, precise navigation and sound knowledge of local conditions. If the vessel command does not hold a valid route-specific licence, a qualified pilot navigates the vessel safely through the narrow fairway, strong currents and confined bridge passages. The pilots of the Swiss Rhine ports train worst-case scenarios on the simulator every year in order to maintain traffic safety and prepare thoroughly for potential emergencies.

If a pilot suddenly becomes unavailable, for whatever reason, the vessel’s regular command must assume full responsibility even without a route-specific licence. All necessary measures must be initiated immediately in order to prevent a possible accident. Simulator training strengthens individual stress management and improves decision-making in critical situations. Every decision counts: adjusting speed, checking the distance from the riverbanks or responding to other unexpected events – all with the aim of minimising risks to people, vessel and cargo.

Targeted preparation through simulator training strengthens safety awareness and the ability to act effectively. Only those who are able to remain calm, precise and compliant with the applicable regulations under pressure can handle critical situations confidently.

• Compliance with the Rheinfelden–Basel Navigation Ordinance (Schifffahrtsverordnung Rheinfelden-Basel)
• Internal and external communication procedures (radio discipline)
• Application of professional knowledge during route navigation and manoeuvring
• Emergency manoeuvres to avoid an accident
