SBF Inland & Sea (combined course)
Aim
After completing the course and passing the exam, you are authorised to:
- to safely and independently operate pleasure craft with a length of less than 20 metres (on the Rhine, less than 15 metres) and an engine power of more than 15 hp (on the Rhine, more than 5 hp) on inland waterways such as the Rhine, Moselle and Danube.
- to operate pleasure craft with no length restriction and an engine power of more than 15 hp in coastal and high-sea areas such as the North Sea, Baltic Sea and Mediterranean.
The course takes place over a period of 26 days. Four face-to-face teaching units are planned for the SBF Inland & Sea (combined course) (four sessions and a meeting on the information evening). The total duration is approx. 10 hours. Details and times can be found below.
Description
- Thursday, 28 August 2025, 5:30 p.m. to approx. 9:00 p.m. Information evening (answers to questions regarding the process, dates for the driving training, learning requirements, etc.), followed by the first day of class.
- Saturday, 30 August 2025 9:30 a.m. to approx. 12:30 p.m. 2nd day of class (SeeSchStrO, navigation, visual signals, knot theory).
- Tuesday, 2 September 2025 5:30 p.m. to approx. 7:30 p.m. 3rd day of class (navigation tasks).
- Tuesday, 23 September 2025, 5:30 p.m. to approx. 7:00 p.m. 4th day of instruction (BinSchStrO).
The SBF Binnen & See (combined course) is an official, internationally recognised licence that authorises the holder to operate motorised pleasure boats on inland waterways as well as in coastal and offshore areas. The course offers comprehensive preparation through theoretical instruction and practical driving experience.

Content
- Discussion at the information evening: Introduction and answering of questions about the course schedule, dates for the practical training and study requirements.
- 1st day of class: Introduction to the SeeSchStrO (German Maritime Navigation Rules), navigation, visual signals and knot theory.
- 2nd day of class: Advanced navigation and navigation tasks.
- 3rd day of class: Basics of the BinSchStrO (German Inland Waterways Navigation Rules).
- Boating training on a weekend with a subsequent practical exam.

- The prerequisite for the SBF Inland & Sea (combined course) is a minimum age of 16 years.
- The examination fees are not included in the prices quoted.
- The course includes 7 classroom teaching hours, spread over 4 sessions, including a meeting on the information evening.
