Rhine Patent – Compact Course

03.11. – 11.11.2025

Legal Basis: Rhine Vessel Personnel Ordinance (RheinSchPersV)

Course: 03.11. – 11.11.2025 in Bingen

Aim

The shared goal is to successfully prepare for the examination of the Swiss Rhine Ports (SRH) in Basel, establishing the foundation for professional advancement to leadership positions on the Rhine.

Description

With the adaptation of the Rhine Vessel Personnel Ordinance (RheinSchPersV) to EU Directive 2017/2397 “Professional Qualifications in Inland Navigation” by the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR), the examination content and structure of the Rhine Patent have been clearly defined and are regularly updated. These standards ensure a uniform and demanding qualification for vessel command on the Rhine.

It is not enough to simply steer an inland vessel from “A” to “B” – on the Rhine, vessel command requires the safe and anticipatory operation of the inland vessel, taking into account the specific challenges of the Rhine. The size of the vessel plays only a minor role. Rather, it is the responsibility of the vessel’s command to make all nautical and technical decisions in a way that ensures the safe transport of goods or passengers – on one of Europe’s busiest and most demanding waterways.

Understanding and applying the national and international regulations specific to Rhine navigation is essential. This also includes precise route planning that considers the specific traffic rules, water levels, and unique navigation conditions of the Rhine.

The high demands placed on crews on the Rhine require leadership to take on the main responsibility consciously and competently. Managing day-to-day operations on board – whether in cargo shipping, passenger transport, push towing, or ferry operations – is indispensable. Any kind of incident must be consistently avoided. A solid education and targeted preparation for this responsibility are therefore essential.
