Aim
The first aid course provides the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely perform life-saving emergency measures on board. It is designed for all crew members in inland navigation and forms part of the basic safety training programme.
Description
Note: This course is available on demand and can be flexibly delivered at any River Academy location – either on site or in a hybrid format (online theory and in-person practical training).
The First Aid Course is a certified training programme developed in cooperation with our partner HEAT Düsseldorf and meets the current requirements for use in inland navigation.
The training can be completed either as a traditional classroom-based course or in a hybrid format – with theory modules delivered online and practical exercises conducted in person. Participants benefit from modern e-learning components such as videos and digital content, combined with realistic emergency training under the guidance of qualified instructors. The focus is on the safe and effective application of first aid measures in realistic onboard scenarios.

Content
- Fundamentals of First Aid in Inland Navigation
- Recognising and assessing emergency situations
- Life-saving immediate measures (e.g. recovery position, resuscitation, bleeding control)
- Dealing with unconsciousness, respiratory distress, and cardiac arrest
- Treatment of injuries, burns, and hypothermia
- First aid in cases of electrical accidents, poisoning, and drowning
- Organisation of emergency response on board (alerting, communication, documentation)
- Practical exercises using realistic case scenarios
- Use of first aid equipment and onboard medical supplies
- Refreshing individual confidence and action readiness in emergency situations
