Compact Training for Steering Personnel

Aim

During the training, challenging simulator scenarios are used to develop existing knowledge and skills that are directly relevant to everyday operations on board. A key aspect is ensuring that all manoeuvres are carried out in accordance with the applicable regulations in order to maintain both safety and compliance during routine operations.

Description

Persons steering the vessel do not need to hold a licence or boatmaster’s certificate in order to temporarily take over the steering of a vessel, for example during breaks taken by the person responsible for vessel command. Regular compact training allows participants to further develop their existing skills under realistic simulator conditions and to assess how effectively they can transfer what they have learned in simulation to practical operations. A sound command of inland waterway traffic regulations is essential in order to help prevent accidents.

The compact training also places emphasis on participants developing their own solutions to complex challenges and applying the strategies they have learned flexibly. By reflecting on their own approach after each training section, participants can identify individual strengths and areas for improvement. The realistic simulation environment allows them to put their knowledge directly into practice and to build greater confidence when dealing with critical situations. This strengthens both their ability to act effectively and their confidence in their own decision-making, helping to prepare steering personnel for the demands of everyday operations on board.

• Compliance with inland waterway traffic regulations when navigating a waterway
• Internal and external communication procedures (radio discipline)
• Training in different navigation areas (river/canal)
• Application of professional knowledge during manoeuvring
• Emergency manoeuvres to avoid an accident
• Conduct under special circumstances
